T he mere mention of the province of Pangasinan always reminds me of the much celebrated Our Lady of Manaoag Church. The other half of my ancestors actually came from the town of Manaoag, so when I say I've been there for more than a hundred times already, I'm telling you the truth. So, what's interesting about the Our Lady of Manaoag Church? The title's associated image, which is supposedly miraculous, is enshrined inside the church. The statue is a 17th-century ivory image of the Virgin Mary carrying the child Jesus and was brought to the Philippines from Spain via the Manila galleon from Acapulco by a priest named Juan de San Jacinto. Documents dating back to 1610 attest that a middle-aged farmer walking home heard a mysterious female voice. He looked around and saw on a cloud-veiled treetop an apparition of the Virgin Mary, holding a rosary in her right hand and the Child Jesus in her left arm, all amidst a heavenly glow. Mary told the farmer where she wa

What the LTO says about changing mag wheels, rims and tires of your car, motorcycle

The new LTO PMVIC, or the Land Transportation Office - Private Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers, has started operations in some parts of the country for inspections of cars and motorcycles due for registration renewal. Dubbed as MVIS (Motor Vehicle Inspection System), it aims to test the roadworthiness of private and commercial vehicles prior to their registration. This also includes the checking of modifications, upgrades and accessories that have been installed on your vehicles - whether factory or aftermarket. If they don't meet LTO standards, you fail the test. Failing the MVIS test means you have to retake the inspection and worse, you can't register your vehicle any more. For purposes of discussion, I chose to talk about wheels and tires because they are the most frequently modified parts of our cars and motorcycles. Now comes the question: Is it considered illegal to replace your wheels with aftermarket mag wheels? Can those u

MUST-READ: Here's the new LTO guidelines for bike lanes (+ penalties, fines)

The country is gearing up for a more progressive attitude toward bicycle use in the nation, particularly in the National Capital Region.  Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Metro Manila has become a place full of bicyclists who commute, run errands or simply enjoy some recreational activity. The construction and use of bike lanes are becoming more common across cities, helping to promote biker safety. Motorists are now being reminded (constantly!) that they are prohibited from driving a vehicle on a bicycle lane except under limited circumstances, like when (1) entering or leaving a roadway; or, (2) preparing for a turn from an intersection. LTO guidelines for bicycle lanes Just recently, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) released a public advisory regarding the guidelines and protocols for drivers in the operation of motorcycles, cars, trucks and other motorized vehicles. Here are the guidelines for bicycle lanes. 1
