LIST: Fantastic hams, and where to find them in Metro Manila

UPDATED: December 21, 2020

So much ham, so little time!

'Tis the season of the fabulous hams, and as we slide nearer into Christmas, one has to ponder: where are the best places to buy Xmas hams?

Traditional Filipinos like their hams home cooked - but for most of us, it's going to be a visit to our favorite ham shop.

Here's where you can get the best and delicious Christmas hams, not in their particular order:

1. Excelente Hams - I practically grew up with them, commuting from our old house in Caloocan City to Echague Street (now Carlos Palanca) in Quiapo, Manila. Theirs is the most popular in Metro Manila and you can always see them on television during the holidays. Price starts from Php 1,040 to Php 1,500 per kilo.

2. The Plaza Hams - This four-generation, family-run ham store never fail to reach the dining tables of most Filipinos. You can get their smoked and crispy hams at the SM Megamall and at their website HERE. Prices start from Php 1,600 to Php 2,500 per kilo.

3. The Majestic Hams - So distinctly Chinese, these sugar-sweet glazed hams are available at Rustan's Makati, Greenhills San Juan, Cherry Foodarama Congressional, Tropical Hut Panay, and Shopwise Supermarkets. You can also order via their Facebook page HERE. Prices start from Php 1,100 to Php 1,650 per kilo.

4. Adelina's Hams - Established in 1955, these legendary Chinese-cured hams are available at 180 Kalentong Street, Mandaluyong City and at their Facebook page HERE. (UPDATE: a quick look at their FB Page says pre-orders are no longer entertained after Dec 18, 2020 and only walk-in clients will be accomodated.) Prices start from Php 1,360 to Php 1,540 per kilo.

5. Purefoods and King Sue brands - For those tight on the budget, the Purefoods and King Sue brands are the most affordable (yet tasty) hams you can get this Christmas. They're unmistakably Chinese and contains real meat, not just extenders. Available on most leading supermarkets and groceries. Prices start from Php 555 to P900 per kilo, and up.

NOTE: Prices and promotions for Christmas hams listed in this article are subject to change without prior notice.

What the LTO says about changing mag wheels, rims and tires of your car, motorcycle

The new LTO PMVIC, or the Land Transportation Office - Private Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers, has started operations in some parts of the country for inspections of cars and motorcycles due for registration renewal. Dubbed as MVIS (Motor Vehicle Inspection System), it aims to test the roadworthiness of private and commercial vehicles prior to their registration. This also includes the checking of modifications, upgrades and accessories that have been installed on your vehicles - whether factory or aftermarket. If they don't meet LTO standards, you fail the test. Failing the MVIS test means you have to retake the inspection and worse, you can't register your vehicle any more. For purposes of discussion, I chose to talk about wheels and tires because they are the most frequently modified parts of our cars and motorcycles. Now comes the question: Is it considered illegal to replace your wheels with aftermarket mag wheels? Can those u...

Gratitude made sweeter this New Year with Red Ribbon

Every New Year begins with a list. It can span from the goal to be healthier, work harder, save more, or do better. But what if this year, the most meaningful resolution isn’t about becoming more, but about appreciating what’s already here?   More people are starting the year with a quieter, deeper intention: choosing a grateful heart. Leading this shift from ambition to appreciation is the Red Ribbon Petite Cakes , which come in—not as a symbol of excess, but as a symbol of meaning. These four-inch cakes are made for moments that don’t need fireworks, just sincerity. Moments when you want to say, “I see you. I appreciate you. I wouldn’t be here without you.”   Reframing the Resolutions We Usually Make   Instead of “New Year, New Me” — Try “Thank You for the Me I’ve Become”   The start of the year often brings promotions, fresh roles, and new opportunities. But behind every achievement are me...

Commuter's Guide to Modern Jeepney Routes, Fares in Metro Manila

With the easing of Covid quarantine measures in Metro Manila, the government reopens a number of jeepney routes to try to get life in the metropolis back to something like normal. But for the time being, only the modern public utility vehicles or the "modern jeepneys," as we call them, will be allowed. They will serve areas in Metro Manila that are under general community quarantine (GCQ) as the transition into the “new normal” continues. Below are the routes of modern jeepneys allowed to travel based on the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Omnibus Franchising Guidelines (OFG). Cashless fare payment systems are implemented and only 50% of total passenger capacity can be used to comply with social distancing measures. The minimum fare for the first 4 kilometers is Php11, and an additional Php1.50 for the next few kilometers if non-air-conditioned and Php1.80 if air-conditioned. Initially, there are 34 routes available for the metro commuters...
