U.S. Border Patrol agents say smugglers have come up with yet another creative way to get drugs in the country -- a cannon.

Mexican police found a pick-up truck with a pneumatic cannon mounted on it.

Reports say that police in north-western Mexico seized a ''cannon'' used to launch packets of drugs to the US side of the border.

The pneumatic-powered device was found mounted on the back of a pick-up truck with California licence plates, the Mexicali police chief, Marco Antonio Carrillo, said on Friday.

The device was capable of shooting two-kilogram cans containing the drugs 400 meters into US territory, authorities said.

Municipal police found the abandoned vehicle during an operation in a neighborhood of Mexicali, the capital of Baja California state. No arrests have been made.

Mr Carrillo said the mobility of the drug-smuggling method had made it a problem for authorities on both sides of the border.

In a Fox News report, it said a total of 33 cans of marijuana were spotted Friday in a field near where the Colorado River crosses the U.S.-Mexico border. They believe the cans were launched about 500 feet (152 meters) into the U.S. using the pneumatic-powered cannon.

After searching the area, agents recovered a carbon dioxide tank.

Mexican authorities were also notified and searched their side of the border.

The 85 pounds (38.5 kilograms) of marijuana found in the cans had an estimated value of $42,500.

In a separate incident, US and Mexican authorities on Friday dismantled a tunnel under construction in the US border city of Nogales, Arizona.

The passageway is one of 27 found in the city in the past three years. In the joint operation, Mexican authorities arrested a man found digging the tunnel on the Mexican side of the border.--Source: Fox News/Canberra Times
